Sa bhliain 2003 thug Alan Desmond aghaidh ar an bPolainn chun Gaeilge a mhúineadh in Ollscoil Chaitliceach Lublin, in Oirthear na tíre sin. Conradh bliana a bhí aige agus is beag a shíl sé go bhfanfadh sé ceithre bliana ann. Chomh maith le cuntas beoga soléite a thabhairt ar na háiteanna éagsúla ar thug sé cuairt orthu tugann sé léargas tuisceanach dúinn sa leabhar seo ar mhuintir na Polainne féin, ar a ndílseacht don chreideamh Caitliceach, a mbá leis an bPápa Polannach, Eoin Pól II, agus a nósanna ag féilte eaglasta.
Tá cur síos freisin ar an éagóir a rinneadh ar an bPolainn le linn agus i ndiaidh an Dara Cogadh Domhanda agus ar na hathruithe a tháinig ar an tír ó cuireadh deireadh leis an réimeas cumannach inti agus an Pholainn anois ina ballstát de chuid an Aontais Eorpaigh.
Agus breis agus 200,000 Polannach i bPoblacht na hÉireann faoi láthair is beag Éireannach nach mbíonn teagmháil acu ó am go chéile le duine acu. Is mór an chabhair an leabhar seo chun aithne níos fearr a chur orthu.
In 2003 Alan Desmond headed to Poland to teach Irish in the Catholic University of Lublin, in the east of that country. It was a one year contract and little did he think that he would go on to spend four years there. As well as readable lively accounts of the different places he visited, he provides a thoughtful overview of the Polish population, their loyalty to Catholicism, their support for John Paul II, and their traditions during various ecclesiastical festivals.
There is also an account of the injustice suffered by Poland during and after the Second World War and of the changes that happened to the country since the communist regime there was ended and Poland joined the EU.
